Payroll Accountant

Job Summary: Mesa is seeking a detail-oriented and reliable Payroll/Staff Accountant to manage payroll processing and support core accounting operations. This role ensures accurate and timely employee pay while contributing to the company's financial processes, including reconciliations, journal entries, and reporting. The ideal candidate will bring strong knowledge of payroll compliance and accounting principles, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment. The payroll accountant plays a crucial role in overseeing and managing all aspects of payroll operations to ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll transactions for employees. They are responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations, as well as company policies. Collaboration with HR and the accounting and finance departments is essential to maintain accurate employee records and payroll data.

Responsibilities:

  • Administer full-cycle semi-monthly payroll for all employees, including onboarding, terminations, and benefit enrollments
  • Maintain and verify accurate employee records in ADP
  • Collaborate with HR and accounting departments to ensure accuracy of employee data and payroll data
  • Prepare and post payroll journal entries and calculate manual checks when needed
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local payroll tax laws and regulations through research and implementing necessary changes
  • Process wage garnishments, unemployment claims, and COBRA documentation
  • Submit 401(k), Flex, and other benefit reports to third-party administrators
  • Submit quarterly reports such as Workers' Comp and state reporting requirements
  • Support open enrollment, benefit rate updates, and ACA compliance
  • Maintain payroll calendar and assist with annual updates in ADP
  • Support year-end payroll activities, including W-2 and 1095-C preparation
  • Post crew labor worksheets
  • Maintain internal documentation and procedures for payroll and accounting processes
  • Assist with surveys, employment verifications, and special projects as needed
  • Provide general accounting support

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or equivalent work experience
  • 3+ years of experience in payroll and accounting roles, preferably in logistics or a related industry
  • Proficiency in payroll software such as ADP; experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of payroll regulations, accounting principles, and reconciliation procedures
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and time management skills
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive data with discretion
